Biography

“Since I’m South Korean, I start with the specific situation of my country, especially the ironic situations that have arisen during South Korea’s modernization process: the division of the country, the absence of social trust and communication, the modern logic based on constant development, the order overwhelmingly dominated by business. I try to break free from these physical, temporal, spatial, and psychological limitations by making experimental work using ‘artistic values’ that can be realized in the present or near future. I’d like to serve as an artistic ‘emergency system’ to cause cracks and disintegration in the lopsided order created by South Korea’s unique characteristics. To do this, I study, develop, and execute artistic devices for stopping the present order and recovering values that have been forgotten or passed by. I want to embody ‘artistic values’ through an artistic process consisting of both methods and tools.”

“나는 남한인으로서 남한의 특수한 상황 즉, 한국의 근현대화 과정에서 만들어낸 아이러니한 상황들−분단의 상황, 사회적 신뢰와 소통부재, 근대적 개발논리, 일방적 자본의 질서−에서 출발한다. 이러한 상황 속에서 물리적, 시간적, 공간적, 심리적 한계를 벗어나고자, 현재 혹은 가까운 미래에 실현 가능한 ‘예술가치’에 대한 실험 작업을 수행하고 있다. 남한의 특수한 상황들이 만들어내는 일방적 질서에 균열과 해체를 하기 위한 예술적 응급처치로서, 현재의 질서를 정지시키고, 잊혀졌거나 무심히 흘려 보냈던 가치를 회복시키기 위한 예술적 장치를 연구, 개발, 실행하고 있다. 본인은 방법과 도구를 지닌 예술적 프로세스를 통해 '예술가치'를 실현하고자 한다.”
