BEYOND SILENCE: My Way
single-channel video
running time: 12 min 40 sec
2008

As part of the series project Beyond Silence, My Way is a video work that captures life stories of an individual living and working in contemporary South Korea.
It was made based on conversations with a man, Min-gew Kim, which happened through regular meetings with the artist. He was eventually asked to write about his experience of living in contemporary South Korean society as a married man and white collar worker, working for a big corporation, i.e. his typical working conditions and his private life pertaining to it. The result is a dynamic narrative of private--issues in domestic and work places, and public spheres of his life—his company’s system of security, promotion, and competition.
My Way is a metaphoric first person narrative of the struggles of a man in his domestic and work places, the Korean societal system, and surveillance and security. It was narrated from a first person viewpoint on the observations of the surroundings and the understanding of them.  Finally, My Way does reveal the conjunction where personal value systems are in conflict with the particular social systems and the embrace of them by an individual.
