Hollow Breath deals with the existential crisis in human relationships in contemporary capitalist society, which causes confusion and disorientation in individuals. Contemporary society allegedly puts more emphasis on flexibility, highlighted by the ‘free corporation system’ or ‘civilian corporation system’ in order to erase the suppressed images from past, early industrial capitalist society. Since the seeming flexibility attacks the rigid bureaucratic system and promotes ventures, it gives the illusion of more freedom. Yet, more complicated conditions also cause more confusion in human minds. In capitalist society, a relationship is not based on permanent, real connections, but on future goals and purposes to be achieved, for which the real relationship is either temporarily dismissed or ignored.

<Hollow Breath>는 개인이 경험하고 느끼는 여러 인간적 관계에서 혼란을 유발하고 있는 실존적 위기를 다룬다. 현대사회는 과거 자본주의의 억압이미지를 없애는 방법으로 ‘자유기업체제’ 나 ‘민간기업체제’ 같은 부드러운 어법으로 ‘유연성’을 강조하고 있다. ‘유연성’은 경직된 관료주의 체제를 공격하고 모험의 가치를 부각시키고자, 마치 사람들에게 인생을 자유보다 많이 주는 듯한 착각을 불러일으켜 준다. 또한 현대의 자본주의 체제는 여러 가지 혼란을 만들어내는데, 이러한 측면은 인간성에게 까지 미친다. 인간성이라 함은 상대방을 진실하고 헌신적으로 대하고자 장기적 목표를 추구하고 장래의 목적을 달성하기 위해 현재의 만족을 포기하는 것 등을 말한다. 이렇듯 현대 자본주의의 유연성은 과거 지속적인 인간관계 유지를 지향하던 가치구조를 바꾸어놓았다.
